Taurus Judge

I know there was a thread a while ago that addressed this gun, and at first I was skeptical about owning one. Probably because I've preferred autos over wheel guns since I've been shooting. But upon reflection, I began to see the utility of having one of these for home defense.

What I've noticed is that every time I have seen someone fondling one in a gun store, at least one other person comes up and starts talking about their Judge, and how much fun it is to shoot. I swear, I'm not making this up.

That said, if you've been considering getting one, Bud's has them. (http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/p...ducts_id/17251) And the $399 price is the best I've seen, especially when you consider Bud's ships free (plus $1 per $100 if you elect insurance).

Just a heads up for anyone who's been looking. You might want to move fast, though. I was looking at a CIA 850 ultralight, a CIA 650, and an 817 ultralight, and they've all gone in just a couple of hours. They also had some Judges in ultralight, but some a$$hole with the initials LR got the last one.

The Judge is a great gun and the $400 price is quite a deal.

Box of Truth on the Taurus Judge

Not sure I'd want to use .410 for self-defense after seeing his tests.

He's talking about 10 yards - 30 feet. I'd anticipate engagements at a much shorter range in a home defense scenario (unless you live in a very large house). Still, if the first three rounds of .410 don't get their attention, the last two rounds of .45 Long Colt will.

I would like to see S&W do a take on the Judge. Until then, I will make do with my Bond Arms Snake Slayer IV. I just am not comfortable with Taurus guns based on my personal track record.

Re: Taurus Judge

There is a lot of hype around The Judge, and IMO opinion it is just that "hype".

As a self defense weapon it really makes no sense. First of all it is a little large to pratically carry. Maybe some folks wouldn't mind carrying it that is really just an opinion.

Why in the world would you need 410ga buckshot that is only accurate out to 10 yards before the pattern becomes nearly worthless????

Why would you shoot 410ga slugs when you can shoot .45LC????

Is there anything you would shoot at 10yds or less that you could not hit with a traditional cartride/ bullet instead of a shot shell???? Snakes maybe????

Personally I think this has a "cool" factor, or fun factor, but the actual usefullness or need for such a revolver is minimal. It is a waste of $400 bucks if you ask me.

For another couple of hundred bucks you could by a .454 Casull, or an S&W 500 (from Taurus), and then you have something you can actually use.

Does anyone use a 410 gauge shotgun for SD/HD? I would like to hear about it if so. For anything man sized you need a 20ga minimum. WTF is the point of this gun? Someone please preach the gospel to me.

You're not alone. I don't understand the point of this either. I don't believe in wounding someone with a firearm and that's exactly what you're going to do with .410 shotshells.

Thanks for the link, very informative info.

I like mine... 45 is for people. .410 is for varmints in my garden. It is my car carry weapon. Stays in the center console loaded with 45. Should an unwanted animal happen onto my property, I'll put the .410 in. Personal preference.

I agree with the consensus of questionable viability.

That doesn't stop me from wanting to try it out.

FWIW: I have shot 500 rounds of 45 through mine. and like 10 shot shells.

I bought it as a 45 revolver with an extra option. That was my view.

And yeah, veggies must die! lol

Re: Taurus Judge

While I do not have a Judge, I use a derringer with .410 shot shells for snakes. That is why I like the option. Where I live we have too many cotton mouths, and I use the #8 shot to get rid of the snakes without worrying too much about a ricochet. I would be awfully hesitant to shoot a .45 Colt at a snake with the ground as my backstop, but my experience with the .410 shows me I get very few pellets coming back at me.

The Bond Arms derringer is nice and does a good job, but the trigger and sights leave something to be desired. That is why I would like to see S&W put out a variant of the Judge.

If S&W makes a judge variant it is going to cost $1,000, but it will still only have as much utility as The Judge.

Personally I have strong confidence that anything I could dispatch with "minute of judge", I could probably dispatch with a Ruger MK II/III. For instance.... within 15 yards any snake large enough to threaten me would be wrapped in bacon.

I have heard of lots of people using the Bond Arms & Judge for snake control. It makes sense.

Re: Taurus Judge

You know I have never understood the idea of "protection" against a snake with a gun. Sorry but if you are truely "threaten" by a snake, you will not have time to take your gun out and shoot it. It will bite before you even knew it was there. I've been around Cottonmouths, Rattlesnakes, Copperheads, etc. and have never been bitten or even put in the position of having to kill a snake in defense. The naturally try to get away without a fight.

If see any type of North American pit viper in anyplace that I frequent I would kill it. I'm sure most other people would as well. I love animals but there are exceptions. :bulride:

People are hardwired to have a primitive fear of snakes. So I understand.

Re: Taurus Judge

Yeah, fear and lack of education are the snake's worst enemy. It's sad, because you have to be programmed to fear a snake. My 2 year old absolutely loves snakes, and gets most excited when I open the room that has the snake cages in it.

Yes, I keep snakes, and many of them.

Just a thought. If they decide to enact that serialized bullet thing, I would think that shotgun shells would be exempt. Anyone have any thoughts on it?

Yeah... actually not having fear of a pit viper sounds more like programming to me. People like you refuse to get with the "Evolution Program". You are "programming" your 2 year old to blindly trust snakes.

Most snakes are harmless; however pit vipers do no fall into the harmless category, and can kill you.

Please tell me what benefit a copperhead, cotton mouth, diamondback, rattle snake, or any other pit viper has to your ranch, or neck of the woods so to speak.

Look at all the problems educated snake owners have caused to the eco-system in the Florida Everglades.

They should be issuing the Judge, and dispatching the long-chicken down there.
